Trucking Operations Management Available at North Carolina Community Colleges in Fall of 2016


On December 4, 2015 the NC State Board of Community Colleges approved the Trucking Operations Management (TOM) Subject Area today. The Trucking Operations Management Subject Area will be available under the Supply Chain Management curriculum program, currently Global Logistics and Distribution Management Technology, effective Fall 2016.

As of April 2014, there were over 16,010 trucking companies located in North Carolina, most of them small, locally owned businesses.  In 2013, the trucking industry in North Carolina provided 193,550 jobs, or 1 out of 17 in the state. Total trucking industry wages paid in North Carolina in 2013 exceeded $8.6 billion, with an average annual trucking industry salary of $44,411.  Over 86 percent of North Carolina communities depend exclusively on trucks to move their goods.

The Trucking Operations Management (TOM) degree introduces students to all facets of a trucking company’s operations.  The purpose is to create a 1-year certificate and a 2-year associates degree programs with a focus on basic trucking management principles introducing students to all aspects of the trucking industry, preparing the graduate for a seamless transition into the workforce.

Specific areas of study would include the following:  modes of trucking, industry terminology, dispatch functions, customer service, equipment maintenance, industry technology, human resources, driver requirements, safety functions, regulatory requirements, freight brokerage and routing. Personnel employed in the trucking industry typically rely heavily on high-tech information systems that can encompass the entire business model, as well as communications with drivers. 

The goal is to create job candidates that can provide a quicker impact to your business, add value to your business and quickly build management “bench strength”, create a young talent pool for the North Carolina trucking industry and create an education program that will be attractive for perspective students.

Individuals will be prepared for career opportunities in:

  • Dispatch
  • Safety
  • Maintenance
  • Sales
  • Driver management
  • Load planning
  • Customer service
  • Analytics
  • Fleet management
  • Outside vendors that work with trucking companies (truck/trailer sales or rental, parts, tires, lubricants, insurance)
