North Carolina Trucking Association Members

Proudly Support Wreaths Across America

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

RALEIGH, December 17, 2016 – Members of the North Carolina Trucking Association (NCTA) delivered wreaths all across the state on Saturday to remember veterans and honor their sacrifices for America.

Trucks, laden with hundreds of donated wreaths, delivered their cargo to various cemeteries across North Carolina on Saturday, to pay respect to veterans and honor them by laying wreaths. Seven members of the NCTA participated in the Wreaths Across America at North Carolina locations program including; Best Cartage, Red Classic Transport, Harris Teeter, Chambers Transportation, Pepsi, Unifi, UPS Freight, and City Transfer and Storage. Wreaths Across America, is dedicated to their mission to “Remember, Honor, Teach” and, since 2007, trucking companies all over the United States have partnered to deliver wreaths each year to honor those who have served.

While many carriers and companies participate in Wreaths Across America nationwide, NCTA is one of just two state trucking associations that sponsors the program. “NCTA is proud to partner with Truckload Carriers Association to ensure these wreaths are delivered. This is our second year participating and this year, 23,000 wreaths were laid in NC which is up from 17,000 in 2015,” said Crystal Collins, President of NCTA. Across North Carolina, there are thirteen cemeteries that take part in Wreaths Across America and locations with veterans interred are being added each year so the number of wreaths required keeps growing. NCTA is proud to support Wreaths Across America and Truckload Carriers Association and has partnered with Best Cartage, Cargo Transporters and Epes running an television ad campaign in the Triad region for two years to increase awareness and gather donations to recognize veterans across the state (available at https://youtu.be/ism8Daq5m04). As the campaign grows within the state, NCTA hopes to encourage more member participation within the state and encourage other state associations to sponsor as well.

NCTA also participated in laying wreaths alongside those who volunteered at Raleigh National Cemetery. “This is a bit of different weather than we are used to but these veterans fought under conditions like these, so we don’t have anything to complain about,” said Rob Treadaway of Best Cartage, before the wreaths were unloaded. Though the weather was uncharacteristically frigid for North Carolina, over one hundred volunteers participated in laying wreaths including the Cleveland High School JROTC. Each wreath was laid upon a grave, with the volunteer recognizing the veteran by speaking their name aloud and thanking them for their service.

Sabreina Johnson, a local coordinator for the Raleigh area, spoke about what she dubbed as a Christmas miracle. “We had 3800-something wreaths, almost 3900, and I got a call last Saturday that an anonymous donor, through wreaths across America, had volunteered to top off my cemetery,” said Johnson, “All I know is that someone sponsored over a 1000 wreaths. People have asked me, ‘Do you know who it is? Do you know who it is?’ I’ve said they wanted to be anonymous, and it’s a Christmas miracle.” According to the local Department of Veteran’s Administration, there are roughly 5400 graves at Raleigh National and each one had a wreath to commemorate their service.
